Equipment Care Tips
Proper care can extend the life of your pickleball paddle and gear. Follow these tips to keep your equipment in top condition.
Paddle Care
- Clean regularly — wipe the paddle face with a slightly damp cloth after play to remove dirt, sweat, and ball residue. For textured surfaces, use a gentle brush or magic eraser to maintain grip and spin.
- Avoid extreme temperatures — never leave your paddle in a hot car, direct sunlight, or freezing conditions for extended periods. Heat can cause delamination and cold can make materials brittle.
- Use an edge guard — if your paddle has a removable edge guard, keep it in good condition. Replace it if it starts peeling or cracking to protect the paddle's edge from ground hits.
- Store properly — keep your paddle in a paddle bag or cover when not in use. This protects it from scratches, dings, and environmental exposure.
- Replace your grip — swap out your grip or overgrip regularly (every few weeks of heavy play). A worn grip affects control and can lead to blisters.
Ball Care
- Inspect balls before play — cracks or uneven bounce means it's time for a replacement
- Store indoor and outdoor balls separately (they're designed differently)
- Keep balls out of extreme heat to prevent warping
Bag & Accessories
- Air out your bag after play to prevent odor buildup
- Wash sweat-absorbing accessories (wristbands, headbands) regularly
- Check zippers and straps on bags periodically for wear
When to Replace Your Paddle
Even with great care, paddles don't last forever. Consider replacing your paddle if you notice:
- A dead spot (area on the face that feels significantly different)
- Cracks in the face or edge
- Rattling sounds indicating internal core damage
- Significant surface wear reducing spin performance
